The cause is almost always run length. Second-floor laundry rooms in 1980s–2000s two-story homes and townhomes feed 20–35 ft vertical roof runs. Dryers are rated for a limited equivalent duct length, and every elbow subtracts from it. Builders stacked the laundry upstairs anyway. The blower has nothing left. Towels take two and three cycles in January, and the laundry room goes hot and damp.
Installation is a cut-in, not a bolt-on. The fan goes downstream of the dryer by at least the distance the fan maker specifies. Mount it too close and lint packs the wheel within a season. Joints get foil tape and clamps. No screws through the duct wall (screw tips snag lint and build a plug). The fan needs power, usually an attic junction box or a nearby receptacle, and an electrician if neither exists.
Sometimes a booster is the wrong call. Crushed vinyl or foil flex behind the dryer in a tight garage corner is a restriction, not a length problem. A fan just pulls harder on a kink. Rigid metal first, then re-measure. Short 4–8 ft garage sidewall runs in postwar Martinez ranches rarely justify one at all.
